Beginner Flower Arranging Class in Hanoi: What to Expect

By the Cáo Experiences team · 2026-11-01

We run beginner flower arranging sessions in a light-filled studio space in central Hanoi, hosting 2–8 people or private pairs. A class lasts 2–2.5 hours. You arrive, we show you how to condition and cut stems, then guide you through a full arrangement using whatever seasonal flowers are at their best that week—often garden roses, chrysanthemums, hypericum, or locally grown greenery. We teach you principles of height, balance, and colour, not rigid rules. You work at your own pace; no experience needed. Everyone leaves with their finished arrangement wrapped for transport. We adapt for left-handers, sore shoulders, or if you want to focus on just one style (low bowls, tall vases, compact designs). Cáo Experiences coordinates everything via WhatsApp, confirms dates with you, and sends session details the day before. Ask about dates on WhatsApp

What flowers and stems will you work with?

The blooms change week to week depending on the season and what's available at the flower markets we source from. In cool months you might arrange garden roses, lisianthus, or spray chrysanthemums. In warmer weather, sunflowers, celosia, or tropical greenery like ruscus and salal. We always include at least one type of foliage—leaves add structure and let your eye rest. You don't choose the flowers in advance; part of the skill is learning to work with what's in front of you and making it beautiful. This keeps classes fresh and teaches adaptability, not just replicating a Pinterest image.

Why is a beginner class different from a "workshop"?

A workshop often runs longer, teaches multiple techniques, or asks you to complete several pieces. A beginner class focuses on one type of arrangement (usually a vase or bowl design) so you can absorb the core skills without feeling rushed. We go slower. We repeat instructions. We ask you lots of questions: Why do you think that stem needs to go at an angle? What happens if you turn the vase? You're not performing for Instagram; you're learning to see flowers and space. By the end, most people feel they could try again at home, even if it won't be perfect the first time.

Who actually signs up, and is it awkward if I'm alone?

We host solo travelers, couples, friends, visiting family members, expats new to Hanoi, and people who've never held a pair of florist's scissors. Some come for a date; others are pursuing a quiet afternoon away from motorbike noise and screens. It's never awkward. If you're the only person that day, the session becomes one-to-one—we ask more questions, work at your exact pace, and spend time on the details you want to explore. If there are 4–6 others, you'll work side by side but focus on your own arrangement; we move between you, offer feedback, and sometimes everyone laughs when a stem snaps or a vase tips. The energy is calm, not competitive. See how a session runs for a real feel.

How do you handle allergies, sore hands, or physical limits?

Tell us when you book. If you have hay fever, we can skip certain pollen-heavy flowers or position you near a window. If your wrists are sore, we show you how to use scissors with less grip pressure, or we pre-cut some stems and you focus on placement. If you have a bad back or need to sit the whole time, we work at a lower table. Pregnant people, people with arthritis, and anyone over 75 have all taken our classes comfortably. We're not a fitness challenge; we're teaching you to arrange flowers, and that works at any tempo.

What do you actually take home, and how do you transport it?

Your finished arrangement—the one you made—wrapped in kraft paper or a sturdy sleeve so water doesn't splash in your bag. We give you a care card with watering tips (usually: refresh water daily, recut stems every 2–3 days, keep it away from direct sun and fruit). The arrangement will last 5–10 days if you follow that, sometimes longer. If you're travelling and worried about carrying it on a motorbike or to an airport, tell us; we'll help you pack it extra-secure or suggest you photograph it and gift it to your guesthouse host. Some guests ask to ship their arrangement home—we can advise on packing, but that's on you to arrange.

How much does it cost, and what's included?

We don't list prices on the website because they depend on group size, private vs. shared, and season. Ask us for dates and a quote on WhatsApp—we'll give you a clear number before you commit. The quote includes the flowers, foliage, vessels, floral foam, tools (scissors, tape, knife), instruction, and your finished arrangement wrapped and ready to carry. It does not include travel to the studio or refreshments, though we often have water or tea available. If you book a private session, you can ask us to arrange a short coffee workshop or tea experience before or after if you'd like to pair it with another activity.

What if the weather is bad or I need to reschedule?

Hanoi rains are sudden and often heavy. If it's raining the morning of your class, we still run—the studio is indoors and comfortable. But if you feel unsafe on the road, tell us and we'll reschedule for a day that suits you better. We're flexible. If you need to move your booking more than once, we ask that you settle on a new date within 30 days so we can hold flowers for you. If something comes up and you need to cancel entirely, contact us as soon as you know; we'll discuss options depending on how close you are to the date.

What should you wear and bring?

Wear clothes you don't mind getting damp—flower water marks wash out but they're real. Closed shoes are fine; you're not standing for hours. Bring a small bag or backpack for your finished arrangement (we'll wrap it, but something to protect it helps). If you sunburn easily or have sensitive skin, bring sunscreen; the studio has big windows. A phone to take photos of your work is normal. We have all tools and flowers; you don't need to buy anything or bring scissors.

Real Reasons People Choose Cáo Experiences for Flower Arranging

  1. We source flowers fresh from markets twice a week, not a supplier list; your blooms are what Hanoi florists are using that exact week.
  2. Our hosts are not part-time Instagram influencers—they arrange flowers professionally or semi-professionally and teach because they want to share the skill, not build a brand.
  3. We teach one design per class deeply, not five trends in two hours, so you leave able to think about arrangement, not just copy a photo.
  4. We're honest about mistakes—when a stem won't fit or the balance feels off, we ask you what to try next, not just fix it for you.
  5. Small groups mean real feedback—if there are three of you, you get 5–10 minutes of one-on-one eyes on your work. In a 20-person class, you get a 20-second glance.

What to Check Before You Book

  • Do you actually want to arrange? Not attend a class where someone else arranges and you watch. If that appeals more, ask us about observation options or art and culture classes where you explore Hanoi's flower culture instead.
  • Can you commit to a date? We coordinate via WhatsApp and confirm 24 hours before. If you're in Hanoi for one week only, book early; classes fill in peak season.
  • Do you have transport to the studio? It's in central Hanoi, walkable or a short grab ride from most hotels. Tell us your guesthouse and we'll send directions the day before.
  • Are you OK with taking home wet flowers? Your arrangement will have water in the foam. Don't pack it next to clothes or electronics.
  • Does the group size matter to you? If you're nervous, a private session or a class with ≤3 others is calmer. If you're social, a group of 6–8 feels livelier.

Other Hands-On Experiences to Pair with Flower Arranging

If you're in Hanoi for a few days and want to explore beyond flowers, we also run Vietnamese cooking classes, where you shop and cook in a home kitchen; coffee workshops, where you roast and brew; and farm and countryside experiences if you want to see where some of these flowers grow in the outskirts. Many guests book a flower class in the morning and a street food tour in the afternoon for a full sensory day.

What Our Hosts Say (Without Hype)

When people are quiet the whole class, concentrating hard, that's when we know it's working. Someone will suddenly say, "Oh, I see—the stems should spiral, not stand straight," and then they stop cutting randomly and start looking. That's the moment. We see people leave who've never thought about flowers before, and they're already planning to buy a bunch at the market and try again at home. That's the class. Not a perfect Instagram picture, but a real skill and a reason to keep noticing flowers.

FAQ

Do I need to know anything about flowers before I arrive?

No. We assume you've never done this. We teach you what a stem is, why you cut at an angle, how to condition blooms so they last, and how to think about balance and colour. Bring curiosity; we bring everything else.

Can I pick the flowers I use?

You can't pre-order specific flowers, but when you arrive, you'll see what we've sourced that week. You choose from what's there and decide how to use it. That's a real skill—working with what's available, not only with your dream blooms.

How long will my arrangement last once I take it home?

With daily water changes and stem re-cuts, 5–10 days. Some last longer. Tropical flowers last longer than garden roses. The care card we give you has exact steps to keep it fresh.

What if I hate my arrangement—can I start over?

Yes. If you're halfway through and frustrated, tell us. We can strip it back and you can redesign. But we also encourage you to sit with what feels awkward; that's often where learning happens.

Can kids take the class?

Ages 10+ can, with an adult or as part of a family experiences session. We'll teach them to hold scissors safely and give them smaller containers. Younger kids can attend but will need more hands-on help and a shorter focus time—ask us about adapting a session.

Is there air-conditioning?

Yes. The studio is comfortable year-round. In summer, it's cool; in winter, there's heating. We're not outdoors.

How do I book—do I need a credit card?

Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size. We'll send you a quote and coordinate from there. Payment methods will be discussed before you confirm.
