Flower Arranging Workshop: Ho Chi Minh City vs Hoi An

By the Cáo Experiences team · 2026-11-06

At Cáo Experiences, we host flower arranging workshops in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An. In Saigon, sessions run 2–3 hours in a bright studio space in the old quarter, focused on modern mixed designs and seasonal blooms from the city's central markets. In Hoi An, we work in a colonial-era family setting, often near the riverside, teaching traditional Vietnamese arrangements alongside Western styles—sessions run 2–4 hours depending on group size. Saigon suits rushed schedules and couples; Hoi An rewards slower explorers and families who want to photograph their work in heritage surroundings. Both begin with flower selection and handling, then guided design. You take your finished piece home. Beginners are welcome everywhere. What's the real difference in how each session feels?

Saigon workshops move faster and serve travelers on tight schedules. You'll walk through a covered lane to reach the studio—usually a working space where arrangements are made daily for orders. The energy is efficient: we show you color theory in 15 minutes, you pick blooms from buckets, and you build your design on a tall work table. The room fills with flower stems, leaves, and chatter. By hour two, your arrangement is wrapped in brown paper, ready for your hotel room or a gift. Hoi An sessions unfold differently. You work at a lower table, often outdoors or in a half-open room. There's more time to look at each flower, to notice the light on petals. The pace lets you photograph your work, ask about the symbolism of flowers in Vietnamese tradition, and sometimes take a walk to a local garden before you start. The same skills are taught, but the feeling is meditative rather than accomplished-and-done.

How much time do you actually spend arranging?

In Saigon, hands-on time is roughly 90 minutes of the 2–3 hour session. We spend the first 20 minutes introducing tools, flower types, and how to prep stems. Then you design and build—no waiting. If you're in a pair or small group (2–4 people), we circulate and offer adjustments. In Hoi An, total session time is often 3–4 hours, but actual arranging is 120–150 minutes. The extra time comes from a garden walk, a tea break, or a slower introduction where we talk about the history of floristry in central Vietnam. Both leave you exhausted in a good way—using your hands for that long focuses the mind. Neither feels rushed if you're present, but Saigon is tighter; Hoi An has breathing room.

Beginners worry they'll make something ugly. Both cities teach the same core technique: odd numbers, varying heights, focus on the focal flower. Your piece will look like something a florist made, because you'll have made it with real guidance. The fear dissolves around minute 30.

What flowers will actually be in season when you visit?

Saigon's markets source year-round: roses, dahlias, and chrysanthemums are almost always available; sunflowers and stock in spring and summer; seasonal imports in winter. Hoi An follows similar supply but often includes local and heritage varieties—ask us which flowers will be ready when you book. We cannot promise specific blooms, but we'll tell you what's typical for your month. If you're allergic to pollen or have strong dislikes, mention it when you contact us—we adapt the selection. Rainy days (common June–September) don't stop either workshop; Saigon's studio is fully covered, and Hoi An's sessions move indoors or under a shelter without losing quality.

How do you get your arrangement home safely?

In Saigon, we wrap your piece in kraft paper and tie it loosely—it's designed to travel in a backpack or small bag for a few hours. If you're flying the same day, we advise a larger box (ask the studio staff; a basic one is usually available). Hoi An arrangements are often built in vessels you can carry or place on a shelf in your room immediately. Neither will survive a packed suitcase for weeks—these are for your trip, gifts for friends in Vietnam, or photos to carry home in memory. If you want a lasting keepsake, photograph it from multiple angles before you leave.

How does the group size change what you learn?

Private sessions (1–2 people) let us slow down and answer every question; you'll learn more detail about color balance and stem preparation. Small groups (3–4) create a social energy and let you see how others solve design problems. Larger groups (5–8+) are livelier, with more laughter and comparison, but less one-on-one feedback. Hoi An's layout suits bigger groups better; Saigon's studio can fit 6 comfortably, more if needed. We've hosted families with kids, office team-building days, and groups of travelers who met at their hostel. We adapt the teaching to the group—no one feels lost or overwhelmed.

What if you've never arranged flowers before—will you feel out of place?

No. Most guests have never done this. You'll work beside someone picking flowers for the first time, and beside someone who's done it once before somewhere else. We don't teach at "beginner" or "advanced"—we teach the skill, and you bring your own pace. The first 10 minutes of nervousness (will I pick the right flowers? will it look stupid?) dissolve as soon as you cut your first stem and place it. By minute 20, you're in a state of focus where nothing else matters. By the end, you'll understand why people arrange flowers repeatedly—it's calming and makes something real with your hands.

What to check before you book

  • Confirm exact dates: Both cities run sessions year-round, but we coordinate on WhatsApp based on local availability and your schedule.
  • Ask about allergies or phobias: If you're allergic to pollen, have hay fever, or dislike certain flowers, tell us before you arrive. We adapt.
  • Bring or wear: Comfortable clothes you don't mind getting wet or stained. No formal wear. Closed shoes are practical (we work on benches). We provide aprons and tools.
  • Rainy-day plans: Both workshops run in rain. Neither cancels. Saigon is indoors; Hoi An has shelter. Let us know if you prefer one weather condition.
  • Photography: Bring your phone or camera. We encourage photos of your work before you take it home.
  • Group size: If you're a group of 5+, book ahead and confirm. We may split into two rooms.

Other ways to deepen your time in each city

A Vietnamese cooking class in Saigon gives you another hands-on skill. In Hoi An, a farm and countryside experience or a tea tasting session pairs naturally with arranging. A street food and market tour in either city lets you scout flowers in the same markets we use. For groups, we combine flower arranging with team experiences and corporate sessions.

FAQ

Can kids join a flower arranging workshop?

Yes, children 7+ enjoy both. Hoi An sessions are typically better for kids because they're slower and often outdoors—more breathing room. In Saigon, younger kids (7–10) need a parent nearby to help with stem-cutting. Teenagers work independently. Tell us the age when you book.

What's the difference in how many flowers you use per arrangement?

Both cities teach the same principle—odd numbers, layered heights. A typical arrangement uses 12–20 stems depending on size and style. Saigon workshops often produce tighter, more refined designs; Hoi An tends toward looser, more organic shapes. Both are beautiful.

Will my arrangement last longer if I make it in one city over the other?

No. Longevity depends on flower type (roses last 7–10 days; dahlias 5–6; fillers 3–4) and home care—daily water changes, cool room, no direct sun. We show you how to care for your piece before you leave, regardless of location.

Is there a "beginner" vs. "advanced" workshop, or is it all the same?

It's all one level. We don't separate by skill because most guests are new. We teach the foundational technique so a first-timer makes something gallery-ready. Experienced arrangers refine their process. Everyone learns something.

How early do I need to arrive, and how late will we finish?

Arrive 5–10 minutes early. Saigon sessions typically run 2–3 hours (morning or afternoon). Hoi An runs 2–4 hours (morning is more common because of light). Finishing time is confirmed when we book. We rarely run late—punctuality is part of the experience.

Can I bring a friend who doesn't want to arrange and just watch?

Yes, but they'll be bored after 20 minutes. We recommend they join in—no skill required, and the cost is minimal. If they truly prefer to sit and photograph, it's fine, but we can't guarantee seating in small venues. --- Ask about dates on WhatsApp
